Breathing life into intricate designs
Nakashi jewellery
The beginning (Origin)
The word ‘Nakashi’ means carving. As the name suggests, it is the art of the highest level as the artists sculpt gold into Gods, Goddesses and Mythical creatures. The most famous ones are of Lord Krishna, Ram, Goddess Paravati and Durga. It has been around for a very long time and this particular art form is quite rare due to the intricate and difficult curves and shapes that have to be hammered to get that appropriate shape.
The art of creating authentic Nakashi jewellery (technique)
Nakashi jewellery is unique as no two pieces turn out alike, this means that every piece of the jewellery is completely unique and different. Nakashi jewellery finds special significance in southern part of the nation, where Hindu Goddesses are most popular and temple jewellery is an important part of every important ritual like marriage, childbirth and other auspicious occasions. The most popular image used in temple jewellery is of Goddess Lakshmi.
The desired image/design is reproduced on silver or gold sheets through stamping, repousse or moulding with the support of wax. After removal of wax through tiny holes after optimum heating, decorative details are executed on the surface with fine etching and engraving tools. At times, black coloured oxidized and red coloured gehru polish is used to give the ornaments a unique look.
Why it is so significant
A piece of Nakashi jewellery that adorns every neck speaks the language of the myths, represents the distilled wisdom of the ages, and has been influenced by ancient culture which traces its origin in the Indian subcontinent. The classy, sharp and mesmerizing designs heighten the true essence of authenticity and art.
Different styles of Nakashi designs
